ANNUAL CONFERENCE, 2010

"New Bern—A Maritime City of Distinction"

September 30 to October 2, 2010

The Council organizes a conference in a different region of the state each year. This year’s conference concentrates on the maritime history and culture of New Bern, which is celebrating its 300th Anniversary, and is centered around historic Tyron Palace.

The conference starts Thursday evening, September 30th, with a reception at the Commission House and a compelling program on maritime decorative arts.  E,xplorer and one of the founders of New Bern, John Lawson, greets the conference Friday morning followed by a series of nautically related programs. The afternoon offers tours of Tyron Palace, the last surviving North Carolina sharpie Ada Mae, and the Dixon and Stanly Houses. The schedule will allow participants to enjoy all three tours.

Friday evening’s dinner will be at the Chelsea Restaurant, rated one of the best in New Bern. Craig Symonds, one of the best Civil War naval historians in the country, will make the keynote speech.

Saturday morning offers more intriguing history programs, including an update from the Queen Anne’s Revenge Lab. The conference concludes with a close look at Tyron Palace’s brand new 60 million dollar history center.

Optional Post-Conference Tour: On Saturday afternoon we offer participants a tour of Hatteras Yachts in New Bern. There is limited accommodation and preregistration is required.
